12:00 pm "Piping 101 with Zephan Knichel"
Zephan Knichel is a full-time, professional bagpiper who originally hails from Edmonton, AB. He works part-time as a pipe bag and reed maker with Lee and Sons Bagpipes in Surrey, BC and is a current member of the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band. Zephan also competes individually at the highest level internationally and has won prizes throughout North America and Scotland. Zephan teaches private and solo lessons and is an instructor with the Robert Malcolm Memorial pipe bands.
His workshop will talk about the Great Highland Bagpipe - its origins, music and make-up. A fascinating and close-up look at the big pipes.
1:00 pm "Trouble with the Neighbours: The Glencoe Incident"
The Gallows Herd" or "Trouble with the Neighbours". A fresh look at the Glencoe genocide of 1692.
A ScotFestBC favourite returns to ScotFestBC with another great presentation.
Robert MacDonald, Kiltmaker, Historian and Antiquary is a descendant of a survivor of the Massacre of Glencoe – but he was also once a soldier who would rather conduct a raid or an ambush than eat his dinner – and it is from that perspective that he will examine the reasons for, conduct of and the consequences of that night of February 13, 1692 for British, European and World politics.
2:00 pm "100+ Years of the British Columbia Highland Games"
Looking back into the archives of the British Columbia Highland Games, researcher Neil MacLean has found a few surprises. Could the Games you are attending in June be more than 100-years old? Neil will have an answer and a pictorial look back at the past century, the St. Andrew's & Caledonian Society which sponsored the Games, and is still active today, and a wonderful surprise for all the attendees. This is one you don't want to miss.
3:00 pm "Fiddling Workshop with Ashley MacIsaac"
Workshop with fiddling sensation and ScotFestBC headline act, Ashley MacIsaac. Let Ashley take you on a musical journey while he talks about the magic of the fiddle.
4:00 pm "More than a Milling Frolic"
Wrap up a wonderful day at ScotFestBC with an interactive workshop exploring the immigrant Gael practice of 'waulking the cloth": an exercise that combines the Gaelic language with songs shared by a group of people preparing wool for making clothing. This social interaction was a key component of early immigrant life, and is still practiced in some areas of the world. ScotFestBC favourite Robyn Carrigan of Nova Scotia will lead everyone through this fun activity that could include a few surprises.
Hi,
I was just wondering how late this event tends to run?
I travel by bus and I would have to see how the travel works out as to if it would be possible for me to come enjoy the night.
Thank you,
Meredith
Hi Meredith. We wrap up the Saturday games with a ceilidh in the beer garden, with all the pipers, drummers, dancers, organizers and volunteers. This will likely last until 8pm’ish.
I didn’t see the Clan tents mentioned on the website, but I know they are there.
What are the charges for an information only clan tent at the games?
Hi Joan. Can you contact Dave Trotter? He is the chair of vendors, etc. at the Games. He can be reached at:
