Stock Dog Demos

What would the Games be without everyone’s favourite stock dogs. John Carter and his border collies will be at the Games, rounding up and herding those pesky sheep and geese. Watch for this fascinating interaction between man and beast on The Meadow at 1:00pm and 2:45pm. We are thrilled to have the stock dogs return.

Dandie Dinmont Terriers

The Dandie Dinmont is the oldest Scottish terrier still in existence today and is protected by the Scottish National Trust as a native breed in danger of extinction. There are fewer Dandie Dinmonts left in the world than giant pandas. This is the only dog breed that has its own tartan, bestowed upon them by the Duke of Buccleuch at the Abbotsford Castle in Scotland in 2000, the 200th anniversary of Sir Walter Scott naming the breed in his novel Guy Mannering.

Irish Wolfhounds of British Columbia

The BC Branch of the Irish Wolfhound Club of Canada has been attending the BC Highland Games for the past four years with their huge but lovable beasts. These dogs are some of the most popular attractions at the Games (besides the pipers, dancers & caber tossers, of course). The Irish Wolfhound Club of Canada (IWCC) is a non-profit organization that was created to protect and advance the Irish Wolfhound breed of dog in Canada. Membership includes people of all ages and from all walks of life, those who owned hounds in the past, present, those planning to add future hounds to their households and those who simply admire and enjoy this wonderful breed.

Irish wolfhounds are pets and show champions, lure coursers and therapy dogs, but each and every one is also a companion, friend, confidant and much loved family member.
