Gord Pollock
Pipes beyond the Great Highland Bagpipe
There are hundreds of “species” of bagpipes from around the world, reaching far back into history. Collector, historian and piper Gord Pollock will provide an “up close and personal” look at these instruments, including Scottish small pipes, Border pipes, Northumbrian and Uilleann (Irish) pipes. Each has a unique sound, repertoire and history. Gord will delve into the history, mechanics and music of each in his presentation.
Gord started playing pipes at the age of nine, in Vancouver in the 1970’s; a time of great tuition and competitive development. He settled in Victoria and was a piper with powerhouse City of Victoria Pipe Band. Gord left the piping scene for family and career but in the ‘90’s, a chance meeting with a Cobble Hill instrument maker opened the doorway to a whole new world of bagpipes.
