Ceud mìle fàilte!

We welcome all Scottish clan organizations and societies to the ScotFest – The British Columbia Highland Games June 21, 2025. We attract huge crowds to our Games all weekend and this is a great opportunity to promote your clan, find new clansmen and women and educate our attendees about the Clan system. Throw in lots of piping, pipe band, dancing and Celtic music, and it’s a festival not to miss.

Origins of Scottish Clans

The word ‘clan’ is derived from the Gaelic ‘clann’, meaning literally children. The Scottish clans system dates back to the 12th Century – deeply rooted in kinship and loyalty, with each clan acting as an extended family bound by allegiance to a chieftain. While originally based on blood relations, over time, clans also included those who lived on clan lands or pledged loyalty for protection.

Each clan has its own tartan. The patterns, or “setts,” became symbols of identity, though their widespread association with specific clans largely developed in the 18th and 19th centuries, especially during the Victorian era when interest in Highland culture surged.
