Robyn Carrigan
"More than a Milling Frolic"
Wrap up a wonderful day at ScotFestBC with an interactive workshop exploring the immigrant Gael practice of 'waulking the cloth": an exercise that combines the Gaelic language with songs shared by a group of people preparing wool for making clothing. This social interaction was a key component of early immigrant life, and is still practiced in some areas of the world. Robyn will lead everyone through this fun activity that could include a few surprises.
Robyn Carrigan, Cape Breton-based award-winning singer, songwriter and instrumentalist grew up surrounded by music in a household steeped in Gaelic culture. A direct descendant from the chain migration from Gaelic Scotland and Ireland to Nova Scotia (New Scotland), she offers a unique and authentic window into the world of the Gaels. She continues to uphold the traditions of her lineage by working as a Gaelic performing artist, through inter-cultural musical collaborations, and by teaching and organising Gaelic song and language workshops in North America and Europe.
